Rio meeting adopts declaration on the future of ISIS software

The third edition of the World Meeting of ISIS took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 14 to 16 September 2008. It was organized by the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The event gathered more than 150 participants from 31 countries and 4 continents representing tens of thousands of ISIS users worldwide. The participants discussed the current state of ISIS software and new important developments towards the updating of the ISIS platform.

The meeting resulted in adoption of the Rio Declaration on the Future of the ISIS Software, which highlights a unique technological concept of the ISIS Software Family and an important mission it plays for the organization and visibility of scientific, technical and cultural information in developing countries. It also recognises the important role that both UNESCO and BIREME played in supporting ISIS.

Taking into account the continued value of the facilities offered by ISIS, the Declaration recommends, among other things, establishing an international steering committee to increase fundraising, quality control and promotion; preparing a wide capacity building programme on the updated ISIS; and redefining the status of the ISIS national distributors.

The participants of the meeting invited UNESCO and BIREME to pursue their commitment to supporting and updating ISIS. It was also decided to prepare a memorandum of understanding between the two organizations in order to ensure the preservation of the ISIS technological identity and developmental mission and the use of BIREME’s ISIS technologies in all UNESCO Member States.
